Art You Can Make At Home with Your Kids

I know, as a parent, that you want to bring more opportunities into your child's life. One of these is to make art: which can allow kids to learn valuable motor skills, freedom to create, creative thinking, and critical thinking. But where to start with art? And what to make at home? Here are the Top 5 BEST Art Activity Ideas that you can make at home with your Kids.

Create Pet or Animal Portraits

This idea is so cute an will get your kid excited to make art. Have you child or kids make a portrait artwork of your family pet  OR you can go onto Pexels.com and find an image of an Animal's face that they want to create a portrait out of.

To take the art to the next level, they can add to the artworks to add their own layer of artist flavor to the artworks, such as adding clothes or changing the color or pattern. Give your pup a Top Hat and Monocle.

And if you really want to encourage art making in your home?

Set up a picture frame wall that you routinely change out the artworks in the frames with the newest art your child makes. Ikea frames are affordable and make this easy. I personally love simple frames that I don't have to put matte board in or commit to forever because I spent a lot of money on it. Give me a simple frame. No texture. And if your home décor colors change? Spray paint the frames and keep the art hahaha.

Art Prompts to Help Kids Easily Make Art At Home

I love to keep things open-ended to allow for maximum creativity. If you are looking to get your kids making art at home but you want to keep things simple, I suggest getting a list of Art or Drawing prompts. You can grab this free printable I made by clicking here, or if you want, you can make your own by writing prompts on strips of paper or popsicle sticks and put them into a jar.

When you go to make art at home, have your kids pick a fun prompt or one they find interested and let them create. Provide them with 2-3 art mediums (change it up each time to keep things interesting and to encourage experimentation) and let them create.

Definitely put on some music for good vibes.

If you want to keep all their artworks in one spot, grab you kids some sketchbooks and encourage them to fill every page.

And if you want to level-up their art making game? Provide them with a reward for completing an entire sketchbook. Like maybe you go on a trip to your local art museum or go to the art or hobby store to let them pick out one new art medium to try to further encourage this developing passion.

Found Object Illustrations

Another idea is to go on a walk, probably better in nature (to avoid picking up non-desirable objects in a city. Or if you live in a city, maybe direct your kids to point at an object and you pick it up if its acceptable, or if there is nothing tangible to grab, snap a picture of something they find interesting and print the picture off at home or look at in on the device) and look for objects.

The goal of this assignment or art adventure is to find something to take back (or take a picture of it and take back) to draw and use as inspiration or a prompt for an artwork.

Once home, place the object or picture of the object in front and try and draw it, focusing on developing Observational skills.

And if you want to further encourage Creative Thinking? Ask them to give it a face or turn it into something mechanical or a monster. Make it surreal. Zoom in on the texture or one spot. Make it the size of the paper or draw it digitally with Google Draw or on a tablet/device.

Create a Nature Scavenger Hunt

Create a Nature Scavenger hunt for your kids to get them excited for making art. You can make a bingo type board of things they have to find and draw then take them to a park or to your back yard or to a trail with a clipboard and paper and something to draw with (choice! Could be just a pencil).

Once there, challenge them to find everything on the list and make a quick observational drawing for it. If they want to extend their skills, they can add shading or color.
