5 Tips for Making Art In your Home with your Kids or Family
Mar 08, 2022Sometimes I think that Making Art and Getting all those messy art mediums out can be intimidating! Here are my recommendations for mess-free art mediums and creating an easy to set-up art space that takes little time and will encourage you to make art together as a family or with your kids or grandkids. Here are my 5 Tips for Making Art At home in an Easy-to-Do Way for stress-free fun and more Quality Time with your family.
Create a Routine
First, the most important thing is that it is essential that you make a routine. Every time you go to make art together, I would do it the same way. First clear the art making space such as the counter, kitchen table, or floor. Lay down your table cloth, then grab your art tub (I will cover this next). Finally, together, set up. Make art. Wipe the space with a microfiber cloth when your done, fold up the table cloth, put it back in the art tub, and put the art tub away. Every time. If you want to ensure you make art together, pick one day of the week, or month, and make the same time every week/month. This will build a routine into your home that you and your kids can count on and know you will make art that day. Book the time out in your phone’s calendar and have it repeat for ever week or month depending on what you decide as a family, and make sure you create every time without double-booking. This will ensure consistency, organization, and follow through. If you don’t make time for art, you won’t make art at all.
Make an Art Tub
One way to keep everything organized and readily available for art night together is by having an art tub. If you don’t have room or a desk to keep set up permanently, then grab a tub or rubbermaid bin and use it as your art tub. Inside will be everything you need for family art night! at the bottom put in your white and colored paper. Put a table cloth on top. Then, the top layer will be your art mediums, an empty ice cream bucket for water if you paint (fill with 2 inches of water only, they don’t tip over easily so less mess!), a few paint brushes to share, and 1 microfiber cloth for cleaning when done. Oh and scissors and glue!
This is really all you need in an art tub and if you organize it like this and do it every time, it will always be ready to go and grab when you go to make art together. You won’t have to go find supplies because it will be always ready and easy to use increasing the chances that you will make art instead of getting discouraged.
Use a Plastic Table Covering or Cloth
My favorite thing is those cheap, birthday party plastic table cloths or coverings. They are SO easy to find, fold, and keep forever. No matter f you decide to make art at a table or on the floor, put one of these on your art making surface to keep the mess from going anywhere. Keep it in the art tub, open it up when you want it, then fold it back up and put it in there when you’re done. Re-use it indefinitely.
Mess-Free Art Mediums
These are my favorite art mediums that are cheap, easy to find, and are nearly mess-free and don'[t really need much adult supervision (although it is highly recommended).
- Wax Crayons. You never need to sharpen them and they make beautiful colors and are great for resist painting.
- Oil Pastels. You can find them easily, they blend like oil paints and layer. You can do resist painting with them.
- Felt Markers. They’re washable. They make pretty colors. You can use them for lots of processes!
- Watercolor Paints. You can use them in resist painting or on their own. They’re bright and easy to use. They wipe away off surfaces easily. You don’t have to wash any palettes afterward because you let it dry out fully and just add water the next time you use them.
Put Mediums in Containers
My last tip is to take everything out of packaging that crayons or markers come in and put them into small dollar store or ikea containers. This makes them way easier to find and grab and share at a table or on the floor. Cardboard boxes are too much of a hassle for me!
