5 of the BEST Ways to Make Art with Your Children
May 24, 2022Inspiring your Kids to Make Art can open up a world of Creative and Critical Thinking for them. Let's dive in on 5 of the BEST ways to make art with your Children to get them excited to create and experiment with art supplies and art mediums.
Go Outdoors to Make Art with Your Kids
The first idea is to take your child or kids outside to make art. Grab "something to draw on and something to draw with" (sketchbook or put paper onto clip boards. Art medium can be as simple as a pencil) and go outside: your patio or porch, your backyard, a nature trail, a local park, a city bench, a lake, a pond, a beach, an outdoor market. It can be anywhere you'd like and it is a great way to go explore new places or see it in a new perspective.
Once you're at the location, take time to explore and ask your kids to make note of things they find interesting. after you've gone on your adventure and they've expelled some excitement and energy, ask them what they would like to draw. If you have multiple opinions of where and what to create, rock paper scissors to pick a place to draw first and put on a timer for 15 minutes on your phone once they sit down to make it fair that each spot gets the same amount of attention.
Ask your kids to draw something they see that they find interesting. They can zoom out and draw the area, or zoom in close and draw one thing they see. Ask them to use observational skills to draw the outline or contours first, then fill in shading and color if they still have more time at the end and the timer hasn't gone off.
Explain that the focus isn't on the finished work but is on the creative processes and learning to get better at drawing, and that the goal is that each time you go on drawing adventures together for a family activity, they are a little better each time. Progress over perfection.

Explore Images or Your Imagination
Another way to inspire your kids to make art is to explore images online with them to spark their creativity. I love finding free, open-source images that engage them and speak to their interests. Places to find Public Domain images include both Pexels.com and Pixabay.com. Your child can use a device to look at the image as reference for their art making, or they can print it off.
The other option is to let your child or kids create from their imaginations. No matter what path you choose for creation, set up and inspiring art making area for them. If it is at the kitchen table, put down a plastic cloth first. If it is the floor, grab pillows to sit on and clip boards with paper to make on. Then once that is done, set out 2-3 art making mediums to encourage them to explore a range of techniques and to get them interested, put on some soft meditation/focus music, and start making. This is a beautiful way to create and spend time together as a family.
Keep it Open-Ended to Inspire Kids to Make Art
Keep the art making open-ended to allow more choice-based options to allow your kids or child to dive in on their own interests and add their artist flavor. Keeping artworks or art making rigid not only kills creativity, but makes it boring. Don't make it boring! Get your child to explore art making with art prompts to guide them and to plant an idea seed in their heads.
You can write ideas onto strips of paper or onto popsicle sticks and then put them into a jar for your kids to pick out for an idea. You can write simple prompts or sentences for things for them to draw. Keep it simple but fun and silly to spark their imagination.
